Google Play is making it easier to donate to charity this Christmas

Give the gift of giving

If you’re thinking of donating to a charity this holiday season, but you’re not sure where to start, you’ll be pleased to know that Google is making it easier than ever before through its Google Play store.

In a new update, Android users will be able to donate to a number of major charities via Google Play, including the American Red Cross, Girls Who Code, and the World Wildlife Fund.

The new feature will be available to users in the US, the UK, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Indonesia, and Taiwan. Although you can already head to the donation page, many users will see a note saying ‘coming soon’ as the update is rolled out across the various territories.

Holiday spirit

In a blog post, Google says, “making a donation on Google Play is quick, easy and 100% of your contributions go directly to the nonprofits you choose.”

This means you don’t have to worry about the company taking a cut from your donation this Christmas.

Don’t have an Android smartphone or tablet? If you have a supported Chromebook or another device that supports the Google Play store you can still make a donation. You can also make a donation via your web browser should you prefer, making it easy for everyone to spread a little holiday spirit this December.

Google Play now lets you travel ticket-free with digital boarding passes

Southwest Airlines and Vueling are first on board

Google Play (the app formerly known as Android Pay, formerly known as Google Wallet) now supports boarding passes, cutting out the hassle of fumbling for paper tickets at the airport and holding up a line of impatient holidaymakers.

Google announced the new feature at Google I/O 2018 and has spent two months testing it before releasing it onto the phones of the general public. The app currently supports just two carriers – Southwest Airlines and Vueling – but Singapore Airlines is coming on board soon, and hopefully, more will follow.

You can find the option under the new Bookings tab, along with the ability to store event tickets from Ticketmaster. Eventbrite support is on the way as well.

Pay your way

The updated Google Pay also lets you send cash to your contacts – a feature that was previously only available in the separate Google Pay Send app, for reasons that were never entirely clear.

It's a relief that Google is finally streamlining its money apps, though the updated Google Pay is currently only available in the US. Users in other countries will have to keep juggling paper boarding passes on vacation, and splitting the tab at the airport bar by throwing their leftover travel currency at the person least likely to object.

Google Home can finally control Google Play Movies

Get chatty with your movie library

Update: You're now able to play both movies and TV shows through your Google Home using a Chromecast following an update after Google I/O.

Once you've linked your video apps with your Google account, you'll be able to ask the speaker to play a specific TV show or movie, pause it, turn on the subtitles as well as a variety of other commands that'll come in useful if you lose the remote.

It works with Netflix, Google Play Movies & TV as well as YouTube TV, plus some markets will be able to access CW, CBS, HBO Now, Viki, Crackle, Red Bull and STARZ just by asking the smart speaker.

Original story: It was a bizarre omission in the first place, but Google has finally patched up a key gap in its Google Home smart speaker's functionality.

Announced at Google I/O, you'll finally be able to control your Google Play Movies library using a Google Home speaker.

So long as you've got a Chromecast device attached to your TV, barking a movie request to your Google Home speaker will have it play from your Google Play Movies library.

A long time coming

What makes the announcement a little strange, or at least a little late, is the fact that Google Home launched with the ability to fulfill these sort of commands from third-party services from the start.

As soon as Google Home launched it was able to play movies and shows from Netflix to a Chromecast with just a voice command input, with the likes of HBO Go following shortly afterward. So, for a first party app to only just be getting similar support seems a bit of an oversight from Google.

With little else hardware-related revealed at Google I/O, it's a small but appreciated new feature for Google Homeowners – especially with Amazon's Echo devices and Apple's Homepod bringing some worthy competition to the table.
