Apple: Modular Mac Pro 2019 could debut at WWDC 2019

Rumors suggest a showing at WWDC 2019

It appears that Apple is planning to release a modular Mac Pro 2019 at its WWDC 2019 conference in June this year.

The rumors stem from a report by Bloomberg, which also revealed the possibility of iPad-to-Mac app conversion tools.

According to Bloomberg’s sources, Apple has “internally weighed previewing a new version of the high-end Mac Pro” at its Worldwide Developers Conference, however, no decision has yet been made.

While Apple has talked up its commitment to a new Mac Pro in the past and has confirmed that the release date will be sometime in 2019, information about the high-end Mac has otherwise been thin on the ground.

Making it modular

A modular Mac Pro could allow users to easily upgrade their device over the years, so they end up with a future-proof computer that is configured to their needs and budget.

This is something that most PC owners enjoy, but Apple’s products are notoriously difficult to upgrade and fix at home.

We’ve also seen Apple take a vaguely modular approach to the new Mac mini by introducing a feature that allows you to connect up a number of Mac minis to create a single, more powerful, device.

For fans of the Mac Pro who want a high-end Mac and have been concerned about Apple’s reluctance to firmly commit to the professionally-orientated lineup, the news that the company is apparently at least considering showing off the Mac Pro 2019 at WWDC 2019 in June will come as a relief.

Apple WWDC 2018: what we want to see

Expect Apple WWDC to spotlight iOS 12, watchOS 5 and more in June

The big Apple WWDC 2018 keynote is June 4, and that means new software updates and maybe several overdue hardware surprises are a lot closer today.

For developers, WWDC offers a chance to get an idea of what they’ll be working with in the coming year so they can start planning. For everyone else, it’s a glimpse at the interface refinements and exciting new devices ahead of the iPhone X sequel.

Last year’s WWDC (Worldwide Developers Conference) saw the announcement of the HomePod as well as the new iPad Pro 12.9 and iPad Pro 10.5. This was also when Apple revealed iOS 11 and watchOS 4.

For WWDC 2018, we expect a range update. Read on to learn about everything anticipated this year, and check back for updates as we learn more from rumors and official Apple news.

iOS 12 reveal

Apple WWDC 2018 is the next big event in the Cupertino company's calendar and it'll be the first time we see iOS 12 features, among other software sneak peeks.

Seeing the latest mobile operating system update for iPhone and iPad makes sense for WWDC – most attendees are software developers. But what we'll see out of it is suddenly a big mystery in 2018.

iOS 12 was due to see an intriguing home screen redesign and tweaks to core apps like Mail, Camera, and Photos, but that’s said to have been shelved in favor of stability improvements. Yes, iOS 12 could be less exciting due to its security and performance focus, likely because of how many iOS 11 problems there have been.

It’ll still have some new features, including the continued push of Apple’s Augmented Reality (AR) ambitions and the still-surface-deep Health app. Parental controls will probably also be in the spotlight, especially after recent concerns over childhood phone addiction.

With security and performance taking the lead roles in iOS 12, we may see the company push the other more exciting features to iOS 13, like an paid subscription to a premium version of Apple News, in 2019.

watchOS 5 unveiling

The Apple Watch 3 just came out a few months ago with a focus on the LTE model and running, but it should take its wellness-focused features even further in 2018.

That’s why watchOS 5 and WWDC may be the right update and venue to show off a possible sleep tracking feature for the smartwatch. After all, Apple did buy Beddit in May of last year. We also hope to see more customizations come to Control Center, new watch faces, and software that makes room for an always-on watch face in the Apple Watch 4.

A cheaper iPhone X?

A new iPhone X, or an iPhone XI, with a lower price tag might be a long shot for WWDC. Apple is likely to save any phone reveals for September when it historically launches new iPhones. That said, any new features Apple mentions for iOS 12 could give us hints about what it’s planning for future phones.

The latest rumors suggest that two models of the iPhone XI will be coming this year. With one expected to have an extra large 6.46-inch screen while the other has a 5.85-screen, both OLED displays. Neither is expected to be cheap, and it's been suggested that they may switch from running on Qualcomm modems to ones made by Intel.

As for rumors of a cheaper iPhone X, rumors have floated around about a version lacking 3D Touch and using a cheaper LCD display could be that cheaper iPhone X, but we’ll probably be waiting a few months after WWDC to find out.

The redesigned Mac Pro – finally:

We’ve known a redesigned Mac Pro is coming eventually, and Apple even recently made a point of reminding everyone when it said the following in a press release:

“In addition to the new iMac Pro, Apple is working on a completely redesigned, next-generation Mac Pro architected for pro customers who need the highest performance, high-throughput system in a modular, upgradeable design, as well as a new high-end pro display.”

It’s been a long wait, but a Mac 2018 could finally debut at WWDC. The conference has introduced updates to Apple’s computer lineup in the past, and what better group to tout a new, powerful desktop computer to than a bunch of developers. The new Mac Pro may also be one of the computers to come installed with Apple’s new, custom co-processors.

New Apple display to go along with it

With the redesigned Mac Pro expected, WWDC would also be the perfect time for Apple to reveal that “new high-end pro display” it has mentioned. Anyone who goes for the new Mac Pro will be looking for a quality display to use with it, but the 5K LG monitor that Apple currently sells may feel dated by June. It’s far more likely is Apple revealing the new display. 8K perhaps?

New MacBooks and Mac mini?

While Apple is updating its lineup for computers, new MacBooks, and an at-last updated Mac Mini could be revealed. The MacBooks may only get minor updates, with upgrades to some of the internals and an increase to the maximum supported RAM. Updated MacBooks may also come with those new co-processors expected to show up in a new Mac Pro.

The new MacBook could also come with the anticipated support of iOS apps in macOS. Pricing is expected to line up with the prices of the MacBook lineup it would replace, and we believe it could arrive as early as April. A new MacBook Air may be joining it while Apple announces new computers.

The hope is for the Mac Mini at long last to see an update as well. It’s been over three years since Apple last updated the Mac Mini, and it will be closer to four years when WWDC rolls around.

Phil Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of worldwide marketing, brought it up last year, saying “The Mac mini is an important product in our line,” but not suggesting an update was imminent. Similarly, MacRumors reported in October that a reader received an email from Tim Cook which stated, “while it is not time to share any details, we do plan for Mac mini to be an important part of our product line going forward.”  All the same, the small and affordable desktop option is still running on Intel Haswell processors (which are a few generations old), and is at least as due for an update as any other computer mentioned here.

New iPad Pro 2018 hints?

There’s likely going to be iPad Pro 3 news this year, even if the next tablet doesn’t actually get called the iPad Pro 3. The last update to the iPad Pro landed in June of 2017, so a refresh at WWDC doesn’t seem like a complete stretch.

Rumors suggest it will come in 12.9-inch and 10.5-inch varieties, include Face ID, a TrueDepth camera and have a bezel-less design inspired by the iPhone X. With any luck, Apple will also take steps to make the new iPad Pro in 2018 more of laptop replacement than earlier models have managed to be. But, the latest rumors seem to be pointing to a release separate from WWDC. Instead, we may be getting a different iPad refresh.

We already for an entry-level new iPad 2018 with a 9.7-inch screen, one that's ideal for schools. It's time for the Pro-level iPad to get its refresh this year.

Get ready for Apple TV content

The news surrounding Apple’s push into original TV content has been mounting, and WWDC 2018 may be when we get some more info. At last year’s WWDC, Apple didn’t talk much about its television programming plans, simply revealing the addition of Amazon Prime Video to its Apple TV app offerings. But, with original content on the way, there could be a fair bit more to talk about this year.

Apple has already started toying with original content, with Carpool Karaoke as an example. And it has also put more than $1 billion toward original programming, with its first efforts due to launch as soon as March 2019.

What kind of content can more than a billion dollars create? Well, it can get Steven Spielberg and Bryan Fuller (of Starz’s American Gods) involved, and it’s gotten Breaking Bad showrunners Jamie Erlicht and Zack Van Amburg on board. Deadline recently reported Apple's plans for a new animated series called 'Central Park' with some star power behind it.

While Apple is busy highlighting other cool stuff it has coming at WWDC 2018, why not top it off with exciting new TV show previews, even if they are nine months away?

Stay tuned as we update our expectations for WWDC 2018 with more Apple news and rumors as we hear them.

WWDC: Apple plays get up to speed

Yawn. Wake me up when Apple reports something new and imaginative.

I may have been the main tech columnist in the San Francisco range who didn't trouble with the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC). Why? Since I didn't anticipate that the organization will declare anything new and important. I was right.

Goodness, a few people thought it was extraordinary. In the event that Apple declared another apple (the kind that develops on trees), a few people would swear it was the most delectable natural product ever, before it was even ready and prepared to eat. I'm not one of them.

The one piece of news that got my consideration is that Apple has quit disregarding the Mac. For quite a long while now, Macs have been the red-haired stepchildren of Apple's equipment line.

The new iMac Pro — with its entrance level eight-center Intel Xeon processor; its AMD Radeon Vega illustrations and up to 16GB of VRAM; its all-streak design; up to 4TB of SSD and up to 128GB of ECC memory worked in; in addition to 10GB Ethernet — ought to be the speediest Mac ever, as well as the quickest PC to date.

Be that as it may, at a beginning cost of $4,999, it would do well to be!

You certainly will need a couple for your megayacht.

For negligible mortals, the better than ever MacBook and MacBook Pro models, with their Intel seventh-era Kaby Lake chips, enhanced designs, and quicker stockpiling, are substantially more achievable. Their costs — the MacBook Pro begins at $1,299 for the 13-inch demonstrate and $2,399 for the 15-inch show, and the MacBook begins at $1,299 — are still high, however inside reason.

The new 21.5-and 27-inch iMac models, which likewise incorporate Kaby Lake processors, better shows, quicker capacity choices, and progressed GPUs, are additionally fascinating, and at a beginning cost of $1,299, I can see one of these around my work area.

However, past that, everything I can state to WWDC is, "Eh." And, even while it's decent to see new Macs, Apple ought to have been conveying such enhancements from the start. Maybe Apple is at long last feeling some warmth from Microsoft with its new Surface Pro lines?

Yes, the new iPad Pro with its 10.5-inch screen is perfect, however would you truly like to haul around a tablet that enormous? I don't. I recollect when the iPad first appeared. They were all over the place. What number of individuals do you see bearing them now?

Macintosh is situating the iPad Pro as an opponent to portable PCs. Aren't we finished with this imbecilic thought yet? On the off chance that I require a portable workstation arrange, I don't need a tablet and a different console. I need a tablet.

Is that so difficult to get it? Somebody revealed to me he was excited he could run three — whoa! three! — applications on the new iPad. Take a few to get back some composure. I've possessed the capacity to run scores of applications on my portable workstation throughout the previous 20 years.

The last equipment news is Apple's response to Amazon Echo and Google Home, the Apple HomePod. This one is short of what was needed, — and it's not notwithstanding shipping until December.

At that point there was the product.

For designers, there's the increased reality (AR) ARKit. For this, I have three words: Facebook's Camera Effects. I additionally have another idea for all AR fans: Remember Google Glass? AR is a flawless thought that is still looking for a market.

High Sierra macOS highlights minor updates, yet nothing all that fascinating. Another Apple fan spouted at me about the new record framework. (What's more, here I thought just my kindred Linux nerds spouted over record frameworks.) He particularly adored its plate encryption highlight. To which I stated, "Apple File Vault 2 has given this since OS X 10.7, Lion. This is more buildup than progress."

Concerning iOS, I shiver with each new discharge. That is on account of each discharge brings Wi-Fi issues and strengths more clients to purchase more current Apple equipment. Without a doubt, I now and then feel that is the genuine purpose of Apple's new iOS discharges. With iOS 11, prepare to state farewell to your iPhone 5, iPhone 5c and iPad 4.

Possibly it's simply me, yet I lean toward sellers that don't practically block my expensive equipment following five years. Obviously, I'm utilized to desktops that have working life expectancies of over 10 years. Much appreciated, Linux!

Indeed, even Apple, in a public statement praising iOS 11 as a noteworthy refresh, could just brag about its "effective multitasking highlights, the Files application and more approaches to utilize Apple Pencil." Oh, and AR — can't disregard AR.

I did say something about buildup, correct?

Just to recap, running three applications in the meantime is not "intense multitasking." The absence of a descriptive word changing "the Files application" proposes should be inspired by its exceptionally presence. All things considered, here's a news streak: On Android, ASUS File Manager has been doing everything Files will do since around 2013. With respect to Apple Pencil, even the visual planners I know don't utilize it.

Goodness, no doubt, why do I continue disregarding AR? All things considered, wake me up when individuals begin utilizing it.

It's pleasant to see new Macs, yet generally Apple is simply playing make up for lost time and attempting to make old thoughts new with a layer of Apple reality-bending paint.

Presently, on the off chance that you'll pardon me, I have to rest on Apple matters until the organization prepares to discharge another iPhone. I'll need to be very much rested when the magnificent Apple buildup prepare gets on the tracks once more.

Beside an overwhelming refresh to the Mac lineup and the designs capacities, the macOS has bolster for different virtual reality motors and in addition equipment to bolster engineers.

Apple changed the WWDC keynote into a major equipment attempt to sell something

Who better to pitch Apple equipment to than designers? All things considered, they may be the main individuals who'll purchase top of the line equipment.

Who better to pitch Apple equipment to than designers? All things considered, they may be the main individuals who'll purchase top of the line equipment.

The current year's WWDC keynote was distinctive. Altogether different, in that it was attempting to pitch equipment to engineers every step of the way.

One thing's for sure - nobody can state any more that Apple doesn't disclose new equipment at WWDC.

In the keynote gone for engineers, we got a MacBook and iMac revive, a mystery for a forthcoming iMac Pro, new iPad Pro equipment, and the disclosing of the new HomeHub savvy speaker.

Pressed into the keynote was what might have beforehand been a few dispatch occasion of new apparatus.

What's more, this was notwithstanding profound plunges into new iOS, macOS, and watchOS highlights. Actually, displaying the new equipment took so much time that engineer centered elements, for example, ARKit and Apple File System felt hurried, and brought about a keynote that felt like it delayed to the point of feeling like a prisoner circumstance.

The occasion was packed to the point that there wasn't the standard ten minutes spent on Apple saluting itself for opening new stores and making billions of dollars.

It was as though all of a sudden Apple understood that the most ideal approach to offer equipment - particularly iPads and Macs, two classes of equipment that have reduced in centrality in the course of recent years - was to wave it before the characteristics of engineers.

All things considered, who else is probably going to spend over $5,000 on an iMac Pro?

At this moment I can't make sense of if this was super-astute, or truly vulgar. From one viewpoint a great deal of Apple's equipment lineup had turned out to be old and dried up, and wasn't up to the undertaking of top of the line stuff like AR and VR advancement, and machine adapting, however then again, packing it into a designer meeting keynote felt like it obscured the line amongst promoting and engineer contact.

WWDC 2017: HomePod is short of what was needed, and excessively costly

Feeling the weight from Amazon Echo and Google Home, Apple will discharge its own shrewd speaker - however not until the finish of the year. Also, the sticker price is, extremely Apple.

Feeling the weight from Amazon Echo and Google Home, Apple will discharge its own particular keen speaker - yet not until the finish of the year.

Also, the sticker price is, extremely Apple.

Apple required significant investment amid its engineer gathering keynote to offer us a sneak look at its up and coming keen, spatially mindful HomePod speaker.

The HomePod highlights a variety of seven shaft framing tweeters with directional control, an exceptionally outlined woofer with programmed bass adjustment and dynamic displaying for sound molding.

Fueling the HomePod is an Apple A8 processor, which handles all the truly difficult work requests of the ongoing acoustic demonstrating, sound bar shaping, and multi-channel resound cancelation.

What's more, as you'd anticipate from a present day Apple item, Siri is prepared into the gadget, transforming the HomePod into a center for data and a control gadget for IoT and home computerization gadgets. Siri likewise moonlights on the HomePod as a "musicologist."

Alright, so why is HomePod short of what was expected, and excessively costly?

All things considered, most importantly, the gadget doesn't send until December, giving the current players six months heads-up, and it will retail for $349, which is eye-watering when contrasted with Amazon and Google offerings. Aside from some favor sound traps - the vast majority of which didn't generally make an interpretation of well into an on-screen demo - there doesn't appear to be much that the HomePod can do that an Amazon Echo or Google Home speaker can't do.

Also, with a six months heads-up, Amazon and Google can fill in any crevices and fortify their items with new components.
