Hikers were saved after they used Google Gemini to plan their trip.

Three hikers were saved from Mount Shasta in California this week after they used Google’s AI chatbot called Gemini to plan their trip, reported the Chicago Tribune.

According to a report from the Siskiyou County sheriff’s office, three young men started their hike at 3 a.m.Even though hikers are told to turn back if they haven’t reached the summit by noon, they made it to the top at 7 p.m.

After that, they tried to go back down in the dark and called the sheriff’s office for help.They stayed overnight in Mud Creek Canyon and were rescued the next morning by Forest Service rangers and volunteers.

It isn’t clear if Gemini is entirely to blame for the bad decisions, but the sheriff’s office mentioned that the hikers were told by Gemini to bring less food and water than they actually needed.Their planned 8-hour climb turned into a multi-day adventure.

The sheriff’s office also said it’s always a good idea to call the local USFS Mount Shasta ranger station before heading out to get the most up-to-date information and to never rely only on AI for planning your trip.
