These 7 expressions have been abused for too long and need to be put out of their misery
Buzzwords
Every industry has its own buzzwords that often
cause confusion in creating multiple meanings. It used to be your
network should be like candy with a hard shell and soft gooey inside.
That catchphrase was bandied about at every technology conference for a
while. With help from fellow CSO writers, here are a few more phrases
that need to be eliminated.
Advanced persistent threat
Things that are usually called advanced persistent threats are not all that advanced to begin with.
Thought leader
Most people who claim to be a thought leader rarely have an original thought.
Cyber
This overused and meaningless term
is now used to describe all types of IT security. Using cyber as
shorthand for the Internet is something thought leaders (no pun
intended) do when they're confused.
Next-generation
Everything is next generation if you think about it. Your product isn't special. So what comes next? Next Next Gen?
Game changer
The game is always changing: As
defenders learn to stop one attack, criminals create a new one. Changing
the game isn't a sales point, it's a requirement.
Data-driven security/big data
It seems every vendor is now a big
data vendor. Every log manager and SIEM offering suddenly became a "big
data" solution after the buzzword started to take root.
Threat intelligence
This is a term that has been knocked
about in the industry for the last couple of years. It really amounts
to little more than a glorified RSS feed once you peel back the covers
for most offerings in the market place.
