Unlikely hero emerges amid dark times for privacy, security

In a world awash with cyber crime and corporate doublespeak, recent FCC actions are a small cause to celebrate.

Wanna scare the bejesus out of folks this Halloween? Forget about the zombie and grim reaper costumes -- think "computer hacker" instead. A new survey shows Americans' biggest crime fears these days are not about being mugged or murdered, but having their credit card info stolen and computer or smartphone hacked.

And the unlikely avenger "using its powers for good" this Halloween season might be the FCC, which has been standing up for consumers' rights and safeguarding their data.

The Gallup polling agency this week released the results of its annual survey on crime worries in the United States, and for the first time hacking tops the list. Sixty nine percent of those surveyed worry "frequently" or "occasionally" about hackers stealing their credit card info from stores. Having unauthorized people access their computer or smartphone -- the second most-feared crime -- was a worry for 62 percent.
Those fears are likely warranted. While statistics show a steady decrease in violent crimes in the United States over the past 20 years, data breaches and identity theft are escalating.

Shadowy hackers and cyber gangs aren't alone in rattling the public. A Survata poll revealed this week that Internet users are more afraid of Google accessing their personal data than the NSA. Cnet asked Survata's co-founder, Chris Kelly, what he thought were the reasons behind users' distrust; he said that while "we can only conjecture based on our previous research, one guess is that respondents assume the NSA is only looking for 'guilty' persons when scouring personal data, whereas a company like Google would use personal data to serve ads or improve their own products."

If so, users' fears will be heightened by news this week that Verizon and AT&T are using cookies to track mobile users and target them with ads. According to a Forbes report, the companies are "tagging their customers with unique codes that are visible to third parties, making smartphone users far easier to track on the Web than they've ever been before."

While AT&T claims it's building in a unique code that changes every 24 hours, to protect users' privacy, the researcher who discovered the tracking called that "categorically untrue," saying he found three identifying codes sent by AT&T that were persistent. AT&T finds itself in the FCC's crosshairs this week as well. The agency has sued the wireless giant for misleading millions of consumers with its promises of unlimited data, when it was in fact throttling their data speeds "to the point that many common mobile phone applications -- like Web browsing, GPS navigation, and watching streaming video -- become difficult or nearly impossible to use." The FCC found speeds were slowed in some cases by nearly 90 percent.

While most carriers throttle data at times in congested areas, AT&T was throttling subscribers regardless of network conditions. The FTC alleges that AT&T, "despite its unequivocal promises of unlimited data," was slowing speeds for customers using as little as 2GB of data in a billing period. 
AT&T, predictably, denies the allegations and says it has been "completely transparent with customers since the very beginning." But FTC Chairwoman Edith Ramirez maintains, "The issue here is simple: ‘unlimited' means unlimited." How refreshing to hear straight talk in the face of corporate doublespeak -- from the government, no less!

FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler has been pressuring carriers over throttling of unlimited data for a while now -- causing Verizon to abandon its plan to throttle certain LTE users -- but it's nice to see the agency follow through with legal action.

The FCC also acted recently to defend the privacy of consumer data, levying a $10 million fine against two telecom companies that failed to safeguard users' personal information. The FCC says YourTel America and TerraCom collected Social Security numbers, dates of birth, addresses, names, and drivers' license numbers from applicants to the government's Lifeline telephone subsidy program, and "failed to employ reasonable data security practices to protect consumers' personal information."

Rather than store the data securely or destroy it after users were done proving their eligibility, according to the FCC the companies "stored this personal information in clear, readable text on one or more servers that were accessible via the Internet."

In a world awash with cyber crime and corporate double-dealing, these may seem small victories. But consumers will take what treats are offered. Happy Halloween!

PHP 7 moves full speed ahead

Next major version of server-side Web development language planned for release in the next year.

PHP 7, a major update to the server-side scripting language due next year, will offer performance improvements and more capabilities, along with deprecation of some existing features.

The release will be anchored by performance enhancements derived from the phpng branch of the PHP tree. Officials from PHP tools vendor Zend Technologies discussed the progress of phpng and PHP 7 at the company’s ZendCon conference in Silicon Valley this week. “[The upgrade is] really focused on helping real-world applications perform significantly faster and plus, we’re going to have additional improvements in PHP,” said Zend CEO Andi Gutmans, who has been involved in the ongoing development of PHP.

Recent versions of PHP have been part of the 5.x release series, but there will be no PHP 6. “We’re going to skip [version] 6 because years ago, we had plans for a 6 but those plans were very different from what we’re doing now,” Gutmans said. Going right to version 7 avoids confusion.

The phpng improvements in version 7 have been focused on areas such as hash tables and memory allocation. A chart on the state of phpng as of this month, presented at the conference, had the technology producing a 35 percent speedup on synthetic tests; 20 to 70 percent performance improvements on real applications, including a 60 percent improvement on WordPress home pages, and better memory consumption for most useful server APIs. The technology supports most PHP extensions bundled into the PHP source distribution and provides speed comparable to the HHVM 3.3.0 open source virtual machine.
A PHP developer at the conference expressed optimism about phpng. “Obviously, speed is the most important thing to a Web app or any app in general,” said developer Pete Nystrom, vice president of engineering and co-founder at Classy.org, an online fundraising platform. While recognizing it would be a while before the technology was available in tools, Nystrom understands what's at stake. “Obviously, going into the core and speeding up all these functions that are core to PHP is a massive undertaking and something that’s going to be great for all of us.”

Also on tap for PHP is elimination of some existing features. “We’re going to deprecate some old functionality that we think is not that interesting anymore,” Gutmans said. Ext/ereg and ext.mysql are on the deprecation list and have both been replaced by other extensions. Other deprecated features include # style comments in ini files and string category names in setlocale().

Microsoft 'loves' Linux? Then stop attacking open source

Like an abusive partner, Microsoft says it 'loves' Linux -- when what it means is that it desperately needs Linux.

According to Satya Nadella, Microsoft loves Linux. He said as much, complete with pictures -- and his team backs him up. In itself, it's a remarkable statement.

Nadella's predecessor, Steve Ballmer, described open source in the darkest terms, characterizing it (with the GNU GPL) as a commercial cancer and never retracting the slur. In many ways, that dark prophecy has come true for Microsoft, which has seen its rent-seeking business model steadily eroded by open source. Though it still has a cash cow to milk, Microsoft's monopolies no longer frighten anyone.

Nadella has also said, "We live in a mobile-first and cloud-first world." Both are dominated by open source. Perhaps that "love" is actually "need"?
Corporate understanding of and engagement with open source follows a common pattern. There's a seven-step path to truly embracing open source, and Microsoft has certainly been making progress along it post-Ballmer. Microsoft is now at  stage 5, "exploratory opening," with genuine investments in cloud computing and open source that deserve recognition.

The staff working on Azure-related projects need encouragement and support. I remember well the challenges of building an open source business at Sun. While each project has its own dynamic, on a macro scale it's important to grow trust and to build influence at this stage of corporate progress. In open source, you live by your karma.

Karma economics

At Sun, I inherited a good deal of angst, both because of the attitudes of earlier executives toward Linux and because of the role the company played as the default enemy in the business models of companies leveraging open source.

Microsoft carries a much greater burden of mistrust, arising from two decades of attacks on open source in general and Linux in particular, which makes its challenge even more formidable. Seasonally appropriate, the Halloween Documents show Microsoft's former internal thinking. It planned both business strategies and tactical dirty tricks to destroy the reputation of open source. While their public statements made no secret of the contempt with which it held open source, the Halloween Documents disclosed a depth of treachery that few suspected prior to their publication.

Today Microsoft has a major business unit asking its new CEO to declare love for Linux. That public stance is extremely welcome. But how can we know the current internal thinking? I asked Microsoft for an interview to discuss its love for Linux, as well as the potential of joining OIN. The response: "Unfortunately, we are unable to accommodate your request at this time."

The best way to gain insight is to observe Microsoft's behavior outside the business units dedicated to exploiting open source. After all, the Azure-related units are bound to play nice because their success depends on it. The rest of the company will reflect its real culture and beliefs without lipstick.

Microsoft is justifiably wary. It was forced to make available documentation for its middleware APIs and protocols as a consequence of antitrust convictions in Europe. With that documentation, the Samba Project has gone on to create a drop-in replacement for Active Directory, and in turn Amazon has chosen to offer it in the cloud. No wonder Microsoft would rather face down the European courts than make its active synchronization patents available as it promised at the time. These and patents related FAT filesystems are allegedly at the root of their patent shakedowns around Android, a Linux-based open source project sustained by Microsoft's most-feared competitor, Google.

In the economics of karma, Microsoft has credits against its monumental deficit -- with Azure, opening .Net, and more. Given that opening balance, what's the karma flow like?

Big trolls

To answer that, we need to consider the rest of Microsoft's behavior. Nadella's own vision-statement does not mention open source or Linux -- slightly strange considering their centrality to his future, but a good sign inasmuch as nothing bad is said.

But another area is much more telling: patent licensing. While Microsoft doesn't appear to have crowed much about its victims since Hoeft & Wessel two years ago, its strategy of shaking down Android users with broad threats seems to be continuing unchanged. Indeed, it is reaping billions of dollars annually from victims merely related to Android -- a billion from Samsung alone -- and a major benefit from buying Nokia seems to be its anti-Android patent portfolio.

It's not merely Android. As Microsoft's action against TomTom showed, it is stalking any company successfully using Linux. Most cases don't become public, as the business model used by this troll-within-a-practicing-entity strategy (I call them "big trolls") offers lower prices for silence by its victims. But there can be little doubt Microsoft continues to actively seek new revenue from software distributors of all kinds.
IBM invented the "big troll" patent portfolio monetization strategy Microsoft is using -- Microsoft even hired the IBMer responsible out of retirement to set it up. Yet IBM has realized that a house divided against itself cannot stand and has foresworn patent attacks on Linux. It hasn't done so via a vague feel-good press release but by the concrete action of making a legally binding commitment via its membership of the Open Invention Network.

It's not only them. OIN has seen phenomenal growth in the last year as Linux ecosystem members all over the world have signed up to OIN's patent non-aggression pact and pooled sufficient rights to their patents to allow OIN members to defend themselves against aggressors.

The flow of karma is also in a big ongoing deficit. If Microsoft wants to show it is a member of the Linux community worthy of respect, it will take more than smiles and pink hearts.

To fix that at a stroke, it should join OIN and make its commitment concrete. The move would show not only that Microsoft needs Linux for its cloud strategy, but recognizes it is part of a community that collaborates on open source with mutual respect. With the benefits of community come obligations to behave in a manner consistent with accepted norms of behavior. I checked with Keith Bergelt, the CEO of OIN, and he said, "Microsoft would be a welcome member of OIN. They have much to gain from joining our extensive community of patent non-aggression around the Linux System."

The evidence suggests Microsoft "loves" Linux the same way abusive partners "love" their spouses -- a deep need in one area of the relationship that changes nothing elsewhere. When Microsoft joins OIN, we'll know it actually loves Linux. Until then, all we know is that Microsoft's cloud division needs Linux to survive, and the rest of us need to take care.

Windows 7 isn't going away, but it'll cost more

If you heard that OEMs like Lenovo, Dell, and HP will stop selling Windows 7 machines at the end of the week, you heard wrong.


Those breathless headlines you've seen are all wet. Windows 7 will continue to be available on new PCs and in retail packaging for at least another year and likely much longer. You may have to spend an extra 10 or 20 bucks to get a new Windows 7 machine starting next week, but the five-year-old stalwart isn't going anywhere. Here are the facts.

On Oct. 31, Microsoft will stop selling OEMs licenses that allow them to sell new PCs with Windows 7 Home Basic, Home Premium, or Ultimate pre-installed. Windows 7 Professional isn't affected, and Microsoft has committed to giving one year advance notice prior to the end of OEM license sales for Pro. OEMs are allowed to sell out the stock they have on hand, but aren't given new Home or Ultimate licenses.
The net effect: You can expect the price of Windows 7 Home Premium machines to gradually rise to the level of similar Windows 7 Pro machines. (Nobody with half a clue buys Home Basic or Ultimate.) Once the Home Premium machines run out -- which could take a while -- the OEMs will simply swap in Windows 7 Pro.
Retailers aren't trying to rush the last Windows 7 machines out the door, and they aren't discounting them to beat an imaginary Friday deadline. They're just taking advantage of a widespread misconception to sell more of them.
Many OEMs now offer Windows 7 Pro pre-installed on machines that are, in fact, licensed for Windows 8.1 Pro. That's a Microsoft-endorsed "downgrade" path. The OEM gets hit for a Win 8.1 Pro license, but all you ever see is Win7 Pro.

Dell ran a great "Windows 7 for the win" ad campaign over the weekend -- Gregg Keizer has details in his Computerworld blog -- that offered discounts of up to 30 percent on PCs with Windows 7 Home Premium pre-installed.

The irony is that Dell is currently tacking a $50 premium on some of its "Consumer" Windows 7 machines, for those who want that OS instead of Windows 8.1. Compare, for example, the standard i7-based Inspiron 15 5000 Series, which sells for $800 in the Windows 8.1 version, but goes for $850 in the Windows 7 Home Premium version. The machines are identical, but Windows 7 costs $50 more.

Poke around the Dell site, and you'll see you can buy a slightly less capable i5-based Inspiron 15 5000 on Dell's "Business" side -- with Windows 7 Pro -- for $650. Dig a little deeper, and you'll find that the $650 model is, in fact, a "downgraded" Windows 8.1 Pro machine.

We're going to see a lot of that. If you're looking for a Windows 7 machine, you may have to check out the "Business" computers, but Windows 7 isn't going anywhere.
Right now, I count five Windows 7 Pro consumer desktops on the Dell site and 16 laptops. On the business side, I see 148 Windows 7 Pro desktops and 94 laptops/ultrabooks.

Why your old SAN doesn't scale

The speed of flash storage devices has changed how applications should access data and heralded the end of old storage.

Thanks to virtualization, the efficiency and flexibility of the server side of computing has improved by leaps and bounds. However, the storage side has remained largely stagnant. In fact, the storage world hasn’t changed much since the days when tape ruled the data center. As a result, we now find ourselves in a situation where one part of the data center stack is significantly more efficient than the other. Worse, it’s all organized in a way that can’t take advantage of recent innovations in storage, namely flash.

Tech giants like Google and Facebook have built their own systems that are scalable and cost-efficient in response, but this kind of innovation hasn’t made its way to the enterprise data center yet. Meanwhile, the storage market is filled with companies selling containers stuffed with disks. While these short-term solutions promise a lot, they can’t solve the problem at hand.

In this article, I’ll describe some of the insights the Coho Data engineering team and I have had in building a high-performance, Web-scale storage system. Specifically, I'll focus on the challenge of exposing the full capabilities of emerging flash hardware in a modern scale-out storage system.

When trying to understand and improve the performance of any software system, a common first step is to identify the most significant performance bottleneck. We all intuitively know how this works: If you drive the system as fast as it can go, the bottleneck is the part that prevents it from going faster. To make it go faster, the focus must be on identifying and fixing the bottleneck. However, the interesting thing with bottlenecks is that they never go away. They simply move around.

In storage systems, the bottleneck has always been the media -- because of the mechanical limitations of tape originally, then spinning disks. A single spinning disk can stream data sequentially, for reads or writes, at about 100MBps. However, when that disk has to access data randomly, this number becomes 10MBps or less, often a lot less. No other aspect of performance has really mattered, because the mechanical limitation of physically moving the disk heads around to access your data dominates all other performance issues. Because disks are so much slower than every other part of the system, the fastest storage systems in the world have focused on how to aggregate lots and lots and lots of disk. Even then, the disk was still the bottleneck.

With enterprise-class, PCIe-attached solid-state storage devices, this situation has completely reversed. Even a single PCIe SSD is faster than literally hundreds of spinning disks. Not only that, it doesn't have the mechanical limitation that makes random access slow. It is now possible to buy a single storage device that can saturate a 10GB network link. Think about that for a second: A single disk is fast enough to saturate a high-speed physical network connection!
The result of this change in the components used to build storage systems is that the bottleneck has moved entirely. The slowest part of the system is suddenly the absolute fastest. If I put additional flash devices alongside that first device, in the same way I might add disks to a conventional array, the network itself will be the bottleneck. I am wasting performance, because my applications can't take full advantage of what the device is capable of.

The network isn’t the only object that becomes a bottleneck. These flash devices are so fast that processing I/O requests fast enough to take full advantage of flash hardware consumes an enormous amount of CPU. In fact, request processing consumes so much CPU that PCIe flash devices effectively need dedicated processors to process requests fast enough to saturate that 10GB connection.

To understand the performance implications of this aspect of new storage systems, I like to think about the idea of "data aperture." In photography, the aperture of a lens is measured by the width of the opening and the amount of light allowed to pass through it. You can think about access to your data the same way: Data aperture is the width of the path from all of your applications to all of the data it needs to access.

Storage systems traditionally haven't had to worry about aperture because it wasn't a bottleneck, but now it absolutely is. This was one of the first challenges that our engineering team faced two years ago, as we started to wrap our heads around what it would mean to build scalable storage using these emerging high-performance devices. After a lot of benchmarking and analysis, we realized that the only way to build a scalable system without imposing significant bottlenecks was to balance all of the physical resources used in the design of the storage system.

Traditional storage systems have relied on a fixed amount of network connectivity and a static storage controller (or “head”), then added disks in order to scale up performance and capacity. Modern storage systems must take a different approach. Namely, CPU and network resources must scale out in proportion to the available high-performance flash.

A result of balanced resources is that a storage system can be designed around matched pieces. A PCIe flash device is paired with a CPU that is fast enough to handle I/O dispatch between it and the network. This pair is attached to a 10GB network interface that can be well utilized by the available flash. Thus, the aperture of access to data increases linearly as the storage system scales out.

This data aperture challenge is only one reason why the days of traditional scale-up arrays are numbered. Web-scale approaches to storage that leverage flexible, commodity hardware in scale-out architectures will be much better suited to incorporating the quickly evolving flash hardware options available in more performant and cost-effective ways.

A bad contract comes back to haunt the team

A tough negotiation over a software contract stretches over months, but the drama extends after the ink is dry.

My phone rang one day. It was my company's legal department, asking about a blasted contract I'd signed more than a year ago. I had since moved to a different division. But the day I had dreaded -- and predicted -- had come.
More than 12 months before, I'd been asked to lead a negotiating team for my company's services division. A bid team had tentatively won a contract to integrate a software package into a client's environment. The client had hired a tough negotiator to work with us to develop a contract.

As I got up to speed on the situation, I found we had jointly bid with a startup that had an inventory management system our client really liked. The contract was for using the startup's software and for our integration services to implement the software.

A long slog

It took us months to hammer out a deal -- a process that required our team to regularly travel to the customer's location. We were exhausted and wanted to wrap up the details.
Two areas of contention held up the process: Guarantees on system functionality and on system performance. I was careful to put the software provider on the spot for agreeing -- or not -- to those guarantees. I also structured the agreement so that the client would buy the software from the software company.
Finally, we were about done. It was nearing the end of the quarter, and business at my company wasn't good -- we needed this deal to work out. My bosses wanted it signed before we closed the books for the quarter. We were on target to do so, and I started to breathe easier -- then the client's negotiator called me.

New demands

The negotiator said he'd figured out that the startup was on the hook for the software package guarantees, and he wasn't standing for it. He wanted my company's "deep pockets" to stand by everything. He was unyielding.
I made it clear that the contract had been structured that way from the beginning, and all parties had signed and agreed to it. I also pointed out the unreasonableness of this last-minute request. He had been in on the process and knew what had been happening. But he was adamant that the change be made.
I then told him that for us to guarantee the software performance we'd have to charge more money. He'd have to buy the software through us, and we'd have to mark it up significantly, since we were taking on additional risk. His response to that quite literally hurt my ear. We weren't getting anywhere, so agreed to talk later.
I hung up, went to lunch, and contemplated the options. My company was not doing well, and we badly needed a win. But I was worried about our company being financially responsible for the work of this startup. This software didn't have many installations, and I didn't know if it would really work.

Disagreement within the ranks

After lunch, I went to talk to my boss, who called in others relevant to the situation. I explained what was going on. The response surprised me: They asked what was the big deal.
I told them we couldn't add the software guarantees without charging for it, and in all likelihood, we'd put in extra hours to bail out the software vendor on customization and integration costs. I pleaded for at least a reasonable upcharge to cover likely costs in case we had to make good on the guarantees. Alternatively, I suggested we walk away.
They offered many observations about the situation and my approach, none of which were very complimentary. They wanted to close the deal -- immediately.
Yielding to pressure, I went against my better judgment and dropped the request for additional money. The contract was signed, and my company celebrated heartily. Everyone seemed happy and thought I was a hero -- but I didn't.

Time for a change

Though I was good at closing these deals, I realized I then faced the tougher task of living with them. Thus, I sought a different job. I was able to make the move, and a few weeks later, I was at a new position in a new division.
Which brings us back to the call I received that day: My greatest fears had come true. The software wasn't performing, and the client was asking my company to make good on the contract. Legal wanted to know how I could have agreed to the terms, while I tried to show (diplomatically) it was a larger management decision made by several parties. It was awkward, to say the least.
Evidently, my former boss had stepped into similar landmines before and shortly thereafter took a different position. We talked about it after some time had passed, and she seemed to have moved on from the situation. For me personally, there weren’t any long-term repercussions, except for the realization that it may be easier to face yourself in the mirror in the morning if you find a way to stick by what you feel is right.

Azure expands, while security, storage, APIs lift Office 365

Microsoft uncaps Office 365 storage, adds APIs, increases security, and boosts Azure's capabilities.

It’s been a busy week for Microsoft, with updates to Office 365 features and enhancements to its cloud offerings announced at the TechEd Europe 2014 conference.
Here are the key developments.

OneDrive gets unlimited storage. Microsoft has effectively ended the size wars in cloud storage by playing the "unlimited" card. Office 365 customers were told earlier in the year that they could have 1TB, but that limit will soon go away.
Dropbox and others will likely follow suit. But looking at the Dropbox plan of $15 per user per month, I can't help but wonder why anyone would pay the fee when they can get a full Office 365 plan with the Office 2013 applications and a mailbox for $12.50 per user per month.
API and development tool availability for Office 365. Microsoft announced general availability this week of the Office 365 RESTful APIs for mail, files, calendar, and contacts. It also offered new mobile SDKs for native app development for Android, iOS, and Visual Studio. Finally, it extended the Office 365 app launcher to provide a single point of access for apps other than Office 365.
Enhanced security features for Office 365. Microsoft is extending DLP (data loss prevention) capabilities beyond Exchange Online to apply to SharePoint Online and OneDrive for Business. The ability to provide policy over SharePoint and OneDrive should help protect sensitive content. DLP notifications will also be added to Office applications next year.
Microsoft Intune updates. New features coming to the service (previously called Windows Intune) in the months ahead include Office mobile app management, line-of-business wrap-management technology, and improved secure mobile app viewing.  Microsoft also announced mobile device management for Office 365 that uses built-in Intune capabilities for iOS, Android, and Windows to use policy-driven management and wipe the device of corporate data if necessary.
Azure enhancements. Microsoft announced a variety of new Azure features and tools:
  • Azure Operational Insights: Now in preview, this pulls together Azure, HDInsight, and System Center to collect and analyze machine data. It should help with visibility into data center capacity (such as shortages), track changes in your environment, and ensure servers are up to date.
  • Azure Batch: This provides job scheduling as a service, so you can run high-performance computing scenarios in Azure.
  • Azure Automation: This feature orchestrates time-consuming tasks to streamline IT operations.
  • Azure Virtual Machines and Cloud Services: Enhancements include support for multiple NICs, so you can use your own network security appliance like load balancers and firewalls, the addition of new network security groups, and a free real-time threat protection service called Microsoft Anti-Malware for Virtual Machines and Cloud Services. Azure Active Directory updates include Azure AD Application Proxy, so you can publish on-premises applications to external users through the cloud and AD Connect.
Since Microsoft shifted to a cloud-based delivery model, it has been aggressively developing and releasing new features -- both large and small -- to its cloud offerings. We’ll simply have to keep up, apparently.
